Top Gun Maverick Review: Entertaining Propaganda

While I think Top Gun: Maverick isn’t a great film, there’s no way it needs to be as good as it is. Seemingly it has everything going against it. Why revisit this franchise over 35 years later? Tom Cruise is almost 60 years old! Despite that, the sequel has succeeded beyond everyone’s imagination. Currently, it’s even one of the front runners for the Best Picture Oscar.

Though corny and cliche, the sequel is a sizable improvement over the original Top Gun. It also hits the emotional beats perfectly. Narratively it’s all bare bones but what sets this apart from most movies is the stunning practical effects and flying sequences. What also helps is a very committed star-driven performance by Tom Cruise, who, even at almost 60 years old, pushes the envelope for producing practical effects-based movies. There’s also a surprising amount of effective character work. The action scenes alone made this a great movie theater experience.
